Company Chameleon ‘Beauty of the Beast’

Following on from last years work ‘Pictures we Make’ the Manchester based dance company return to the stage with the company’s first full evening piece created solo by joint AD Anthony Missen.

‘Beauty of the Beast’ is an all male piece taking a long hard look at men, how they behave and why they behave that way. A mystery to us all, that much is certain.

The company tell us this much about the work

‘[It’s] is all about male behaviour and how men interact. It looks at the different faces of masculinity or maleness – the beauty, the beast, the idiot, camaraderie, strength, vulnerability and sensitivity. And we’ve got a brilliant cast of four (including me) along with two apprentices from the NSCD programme.

I’m very excited about Beauty Of The Beast partly because this is the first opportunity I’ve had to work with a group. Research has come from all over the place, from going to work in a young offenders’ institute in South Africa, with young men in violent communities in Trinidad, to Morocco and other places.”

As well as the work itself we spoke with Anthony Missen about his motivations to make the work and what the future holds for the company.

‘Beauty of the Beast’ has just completed its Autumn tour but will be back again early next year so keep an eye on the company website for more details.

The work is performed by Eryck Brahmania, Lee Clayden, Thomasin Gulgec, Anthony Missen, Theo Fapohunda and Daniel Phung with choreography by Anthony Missen.

Filmed at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester on October 22nd 2014.
