The Sweetshop Tigers 2017 apprenticeship audition will be on Saturday 28th January, 10-6pm at The Place, London. Callbacks will be on Sunday 29th January, at the same place and time.
The audition will be by invitation only for dance graduates who graduated in 2014, 2015 or 2016, and who have not yet completed an apprenticeship with another company.
The Sweetshop Tigers is a non-monetised apprenticeship scheme for new dance graduates, initiated by Sally Marie, artistic director of independent British dance-theatre company Sweetshop Revolution. It offers opportunities for mutually beneficial exchanges with established independent artists in the dance and performance sector, as well as opportunities to visit various choreographers in their creation of new work.
There are 60 independent choreographers working with the scheme, ranging from emerging to high-profile artists. Small groups of new graduates will be paired up with various choreographers who are working on new creations, for between two days and a week at a time, observing or taking part in their processes.
We also assist with blogs, show reels, photos and workshops. Sweetshop Revolution is an associate artist at both Pavilion Dance South West and Canada Water Studios, where The Sweetshop Tigers can access heavily subsidised space in order to work on their own projects as well.
To apply, please send a short video of you dancing, a photo (any) and up to 200 words in writing or a 1-minute speech on the video about who are you and what interests you, to firstname.lastname@example.org. No showreels or studio shots are needed; a film you dancing in your living room will do, as well as a selfie, if you want.
If you are coming from the North or South West, please title the email 'Travel' and we will ensure you are called in the afternoon to allow for travel time.
There will be five 90-minute contemporary classes with some improvisation: on 28th January with Paulette Raineri, a great dancer / teacher / choregrapher working with Sally Marie, James Finnemore and with her own company in Geneva.
On the 29th, Sally Marie will be facilitating a meeting with those chosen for the call back, about what they feel new graduates need. This will be followed by a contact workshop led by Anne-Gaëlle Thiriot, who is also a great dancer, teacher and choreographer. Other choreographers and established dancers will also be present to offer feedback to the dancers auditioning on the 28th.
The application deadline is 12 January, and all successful applicants will be informed by the end of 13 January with their audition time. If you have not been invited for the audition, you will not be allowed to turn up anyway.
