Video - Panta Rei Danseteater 'Lullaby'

Norwegian dance company Panta Rei Danseteater, late last year, conducted a little experiment whereby three dance makers created two pieces with the same name based on the same idea, featuring three male dancers and two musicians, to see what the outcome was.

No doubt about it Wiliam Forsythe, American dance maker extraordinaire, is a clever clogs. You hear him speak you'll either be massively inspired or your brain will melt. The choice is yours so either do some reading or prepare to be completely flumoxed!

In collaboration with Ohio State University in the United States Mr Forsythe and a large group of boffins have set out to make dance "accessible" by, apparently, blinding you with science. The project is called 'Synchronous Objects'.

they say;

"The web project, which has been in the works for more than two years, will allow people around the world to see the notes Forsythe and Ohio State have added to his dance "One Flat Thing, reproduced."

Throughout the project, Forsythe traveled from Germany to campus to work with faculty and students. The project relied not only on ACCAD and the Department of Dance, which are long term collaborators, but also on experts in architecture, geography, visual communications, computer science and engineering, and statistics."

The result of all this technical doo-hickery (not sure that's a word! Ed!) is a beautifully presented rendition of Mr Forsythe's work 'One Flat Thing' (filmed in what looks like a city centre warehouse of some sort), and a dizzying array of time lines, graphics and commentary from the man himself.

Does it make dance more "accessible"? That's for you to decide but be warned, you need a pretty modern computer to run the website properly because it's all built using Flash from Adobe and you need the very latest version of that plugin before the site will work.

Whether or not this project achieves its intended goals one thing is for sure. The bar just got set very high indeed for presenting dance online!

    The source footage for this video was shot in high definition in the Bockenheimer Depot's control room which creates a dark and industrial backdrop for the dance. The Bockenheimer depot used to function as the streetcar operating yard and main workshop in Frankfurt Germany.

  • thanks for that! ;o)

    That websites amazing, if only everything in the dance world was that well thought out and executed.
