Whatever you look at it Zimbabwe, the country, is a mess, an enormous mess that's going to take several decades to fix, if it can be fixed at all.
Amongst all the misery and depressing news it's easy to lose sight of the fact that the people who live there are not just wallowing in self pity they're trying to get stuff done and since the arts is good stuff they are going to try and get some of that done.
Xen Arts has organised a fund raising night, entitled 'Tongue Tied 09', at the Cochrane Theatre in Central London on February 28th that will feature a wide range of artists from a number of disciplines. The money raised will go to funding arts projects in Zimbabwe.
"Following the success of its debut in March 08, 'Tongue Tied?' returns for round two.
The evening of dance, poetry and music explores our rights to freedom of expression while supporting those who have these basic rights restricted. These artists have something to say... and will be heard.
Organised by Xen Arts and hosted by the Cochrane Theatre this night of soul and inspiration will raise funds for youth projects in Zimbabwe.
Xen Arts is also working on a pilot dance project with a youth group at Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney, London to create a piece to be performed at Tongue Tied? '09. With the money raised at Tongue Tied?'09, we will then run similar projects in Zimbabwe, with a group of young people of a similar age."
