The petition started a few months ago to try and persuade the government that spending billions on the Olympics in London might not be a good idea after all has hit the 25,000 signature mark.

With just a few days to go before it closes, and the powers that be are required to respond, the online petition, started by Dawn Kenyon of the Carlisle Carers Association and run by the Prime Minister's own office, currently sits at 25,138 virtual signatures.

Although the petition is unlikely to alter to government on its current course of selling the family silver to pay for a three week sports event in 2012 it has highlighted a high level of public disquiet with the games and how much money they will ultimately cost.

The main thrust of the petition is that money is being re-directed from the arts, heritage and, ironically, sport, to fund the event.

You have until September 16th to add your name.
