National Dance Awards Announced
The Latest News || Thursday, 25 January, 2007
The National Dance Awards (NDA) were announced today and unless you were from the Royal Ballet or your name is Wayne then you didn't stand much chance of winning anything.
The only award that offers up any surprises is the 'Audience Award' which is voted for by the public. For reasons past understanding Independent Ballet Wales managed to grab the award for best dance company in the country (along with Northern Ballet Theatre who also won last year).
NDA has a curious way of calculating the winner (votes are made by text message) and calculated by determining the company that receives the largest number of votes 'in relation to the size of their audience'. So if Independent Ballet Wales has an audience of five and 4 of them make a vote then it's an easy win, no?
Phoenix picked up an award for 'outstanding repertoire' and Val Bourne grabbed a gong because she retired and this was the last chance they had. McGregor snagged a mention for 'Best Choreography' in 'Amu', no we're not making this up!
Perhaps the most ridiculous prize, called the 'Patron's Award' was given to the BBC dance programme 'Strictly Come Dancing' because;
"Strictly Come Dancing has allowed the general public a wonderful opportunity to see the hard work and dedication that are vital to becoming a good dancer."
Yes we know it's a load of crap (the quote or the show? Ed!) but these people don't get out much so we understand why their completely disconnected from reality!
