ACE Cuts Funding by 35%

The Stage is reporting that Arts Council England has announced a 35% cut in Grants for the Arts funding for the current financial year dropping the amount available from £83million GBP to £54million GBP for 2007/2008.
Grants for the Arts is the funding scheme that most small scale companies and individuals apply to for funding across all art forms in England. In dance this will affect small companies, independent dance makers and small to mid-scale education projects.
Many in the arts were caught completely unawares by the announcement and as yet there is no mention of it on ACE's website although details of some of the new guidelines are available.
Presently funding to organisations with fixed term funding (such as Motionhouse or Random) do not appear to be affected by the reduction although there will be an impact if those organisations make applications to the GFA fund for touring or other purposes.
ACE have also placed a cap on the maximum amount you can apply for to £200,000 and projects cannot last for more than 12 months.
The announcement comes as ACE is facing further cuts in funding from the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review. The review is expected to bleed yet more money from the arts to pay for the 2012 Olympics in London. Costs for that event were recently hiked toward the £9billion GBP mark.
