Tim Radford (science editor for the Guardian) has flagged up an article from the Cerebral Cortex journal;
When a prima ballerina watches someone perform a pirouette, or a professional footballer watches a player bend it like Beckham, they use parts of the brain not used by amateur watchers [...] But what wasn't clear was that that bit of the brain was also activated when you see movement, and that is the critical insight here. You use your ability to move, your movement-control part of the brain, to help you see better
apart from being a great bit of research it fits my model of computer based movement simulation and the computer based movement notation i'm working on. you can read the Guardian article 'Why only dancers can do a mental pirouette' and i'm trying to track down the research groups page or an online copy for more information.
apologies for absence, illness and location have shut me off from the world recently.
