I'm sorry that I haven't written this week yet - I thought my blogger.com had lost my blog but no - Article19 had just moved them - and I must have deleted the email telling me while deleting the tonnes of spam that comes everyday! grr.
Anyway - The very first (dancing) day at SSCD....
We started with Contemporary and just about all the class was there 20mins earlier warming up - first years at Coventry didn't manage that - although some of us did aerobics.
The class itself was very basic - we spent a long time learning how to lie on the floor in a star position, curl up on one side, back to the star and then curl up on the other side. With some twisting and extending once it got going.
Then we spent even longer on lying down style leg swings and sitting up - rolling and coming back down again.
I don't mind working on 'fundamental' things but when a class has such a slow pace its hard to keep energy going and my brain wanted something to do!
Ballet was harder, but then I haven't done much ballet at all so thats not surprising. The teacher is great - she's very funny and has high standards so thats fun. For some reason - even though we're the biggest year in the space, they keep making us do ballet in a room without enough barre space - its very crowded during fondue and developpe exercises and grand battement!
We watched part of a Martha Graham video in the afternoon while learning "a language we can use to describe (analyse) dance with" - fun :o( And that woman would not have known subtlety if it hit her in the face. Sorry to any Graham fans, but the performances made me bored stiffer than my hips in the 'frog' position.
Tuesday was pretty much the same - ballet was harder, Contemporary some how was easier and in the afternoon we were inducted into the library. Luckily we were spared the Dewey decimal index system and were toured around the dance book section - all 12 books of it. I know there are dance resources somewhere in Dundee - there's a notice up in the space that due to people abusing the room it was closed towards the end of last year - but there's got to be something somewhere!!!! At least one of the libraries will be able to order in books - maybe I'll search the library catalogue at Coventry!
Wednesday was far more interesting - they were auditioning late applicants during our contemporary class and the room suddenly was filled with energy. Also the exercises we'd spent the last two classes learning we just did- wham, bham, thank you Dave. And then we played Capoeira style travelling across the room. Which made me have to work hard because of spending the last couple of days being rigidly pulled up in ballet and 'Graham technique' - and then trying to find a curve in my spine while "shunting (sort of a sideways hop in our classes)" sideways actually took some searching for the appropiate bits of my body!
Also, because of the late applicants we didn't have ballet - my muscles breathed a very deep sigh of relief - instead we had Pete Royston and did a lot of rolling around on the floor - first to create an almost floating sensation and then releasing into the ground. It was really great to start working like that again - at Coventry as part of the technique warm up they quite often made us travel across the space with very low, medium and high levels. Once we even got to kneel and have someone just give small pushes which we responded to by just rolling and travelling and going for it. ahh - how relaxing!
Then it was body conditioning in the afternoon. Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow. Enough said.
Today we were told that we had the day off - they probably want to discuss, disect and disseminate us. but at the last minute we were informed that we have.
"Communications"
this afternoon. Oh how fun - "My name's Lewis, I moved here from the Isle of Wight when I grow up I never want to have a 'proper' job - this is an audio visual enhancement to my presentation which I designed on Power point after editing the images in photoshop if there are any questions, please don't hesitate to ask......."
I will not go through it again - ok, maybe a lot of people get into further education colleges with out having basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills - but I had them before I got to college the first time, I went through the classes that time just because of the bureaucratic system controlling the colleges and then went onto higher education. - I'm not sitting through it again! - sorry about the rant, but there are so many other things I could do with that time.
Some of us managed to go out last night - it was fun enough. We did try to go clubbing but nothing was open - we nearly walked into a strip club and then we found a pretty hidden gay bar which closed about five minutes after we walked in. - We did have some fun in the place called the yard - there were some girls playing at pole dancing and then some of the boys were doing it too. Until we got on the floor and just did what dance students like doing! That pole revolved by itself which was very fun ;oP
I'm dying to go proper clubbing though...I can but dream.
Enough for now....I'll write soon - probably after "Contact and Creative" on Friday.
Also - I can't work out who Allan McIntyre is in the third year - there are a couple of guys who I've seen but hmm - I want to put a face to the blog!
