It definately isn't what I just watched a clip of and have been reading about all over the place!
It is great that shows on tv like 'So You Think You Can Dance' bring dance to the people and make it something that is considered relevant/important/interesting and so on but after watching a little of it on TV and clips online I started to wonder if people watching TV actually got an example of what I would call Contemporary Dance and what would they think of it? Not much, probably, it wouldn't appeal to the masses but it got me thinking about what Contemporary dance is and the many forms that it takes.
But also what is quite important to think about is how misleading the 'Contemporary' dance that they're doing on So You Think You Can Dance is, they don't tell the public about the rest of us and what that looks like.
I can't decide if it's degrading to do such shows? Personally, I couldn't and wouldn't because at the end of the day, what do they actually win? And in reality, will it last for long afterwards considering the state of the dance world as it is and how difficult it is to make a career within it? Will being on TV gain you some security and ongoing sucess as a result of being on So You Think You Can Dance?
I'm intrigued to see what happens to these people afterwards.
