The Calm Before The Storm

Published Monday, 2 August, 2010 | Comments

That's what it is at the moment.

Calm. Before the all mighty storm that is Edinburgh Fringe.

At the moment, amongst rehearsing and preparing physically for the festival, I have a job handing out flyers for a cafe, and then later this week I'll start another job handing out more flyers for a dance performance at the Fringe.

That's it, I'm afraid that is the grim reality of dance, you can be soaring high but when it's over you've still got to pay the bills. So that's what I am doing.

Only for a few weeks though.

At the Edinburgh Fringe, I'm presenting 3 pieces, all at Dance Base. I'm presenting 2 solos in a show called Heads Up which is part of Dance Base's 'On The Other Hand' programme. The first solo is 'the Bravest Thing You Can Do Is Be Still' and the second is 'It's a Grand Thing To Get Leave To Live', created whilst working with Ben Wright.

The third and final piece, a few days later is 'Once Removed', created in collaboration with Lucy Boyes. That's going to be an interesting experience as it's more installation and we perform it four times in a row. Woo!

It's very exciting. The Fringe is the best time of year.

These two solos are really what I feel a turning point in my development as a creator and a performer, the direction I'm going is is very clear to me now.

It's become clear that I'm not so interested any more in what you might call pure dance, British dance or conventional dance, whatever you want to call it, that's not what I want to do as a creator. Experimentation and pushing the boundaries is interesting to me and far more honest than some things.

Following the Fringe I'll be going to Luxembourg to join Dance Theatre Luxembourg as a dancer. I'm joining them for a little while for a project and maybe again next year.

So for the moment it's all about figuring out how I can stop my brain rotting away whilst giving out flyers for a cafe and finding ways to stop myself from skiving off, I'll get there, for sure.

The above picture is for the Fringe.

I've been thinking a lot recently about how important it is to have good quality pictures and video and a website and so on. Doesn't seem like much but it actually is when you don't have two pennies to rub together to pay for it all.

until I get a proper website, I'm using this blog.

Ok, I'm off to bed, in the morning I've got to go give flyers to tourists who pretend that they can't see me.
