So we are into June already. Time is passing very quickly.
We're the fourth week into the opera and it's going well, I am actually enjoying it. Ok, so part of the enjoyment of it is having time off and getting a wage every week, that's true, but also it is enjoyable what we're doing. Of course, I am looking forward to going back to some more serious dance making and dancing when it's over.
We've been having fittings and trying on various bits and pieces for costume and some of it is amazing. One of the other dancers is dancing the part of a frog and the suit he has to wear is amazing, he actually looks like a giant frog, just made out of foam!
I'm dancing the part of a peasant and a scarecrow, the costumes are nice, although i don't think it's very difficult to look peasanty. The scarecrows head is difficult to dance with because it's hard to see and breathe and by the end of the section called 'wedding dance', I'm always ripping it off to get some air.
I'm really enjoying that part actually, to dress up and be something else, to escape and pretend, to be another character.
On Sunday I auditioned for Diversions Dance Company. I didn't get it, but it was nice to take a class and do something different as I don't audition much. It got me thinking though.
Dance is such a personal thing. Sometimes I don't want people to see me dance, sometimes I don't want to give them such a huge part of me. Auditions are of course doing exactly this, and in fact, I suppose you have to really show every part of your dancing self in order to get the job. Your dance is a precious thing and it can easily be destroyed by what we think we should be like, look like, dance like etc. It is important to know what people are looking for, and if you want the same thing and can provide it, then fine, but it's also important to know that even if you don't offer what they are looking for, then it doesn't matter, because your dance is just a relevant as theirs, if not more.
