If You don't ask, You don't get

Jack Webb's Blog | Sunday, 2 November, 2008|

It's true, if You don't ask, You don't get.

At the moment, I'm organising some space and time for the reasearch of this new solo I'm making.

It will be a period of 'Research in Performance'. One day this month (I'm waiting or the date), I'll be doing this research in performance. It's something I experimented with last December in the beginning stages of 'The Asylum Dances', a work for five women.

The research in performance idea is nice and I'm really attracted to it. It does what it says on the tin really, so I'll be exploring material for new work whilst performing and improvising. It will take place in the Total Kunst Gallery in Edinburgh which is a relatively small space but big enough for dance and includes a huge window, which is where the performance element of it comes into it as the audience are the passers by on the street.

I plan to take with me into the space all of the images and information I've collected and been pondering. It will be durational and should last about 5 hours, so I can really spend alot of time exploring and taking advantage of the space and time.

What is nice about it is that I can have 5/6 hours of free studio space to explore the beginnings of the work whilst being in an environment that is open and somewhat experimental, giving the audience an opportunity to be a voyeur in the creative process. It is interesting also in terms of wether being watched affects how the work is created and what the finished product is.

Essentially it is an experiment, so anything could happen and I won't allow myself to expect too much.

Nearer the time and when I know the exact date, I will post details of where and when.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, the point I was trying to make was the if You don't ask, You don't get thing. I was thinking that we shouldn't be afraid to ask for things or ask to do things artistically as it has often been the case that when I've asked, I've recieved, quite happily infact. It is the case with the project I was just talking about, I asked the gallery and they said yes, so give it a go, you may be pleasantly surprised.

I would like to wish good luck to my friend, Svenja. She is one of the Artists who make HICCUP, a multi-disciplinary performance company. Tonight they are performing a wonderful piece, 'Loom Loom', as part of the Latin American Film Festival in London, so good luck to you guys!

:)
