On Sunday a friend of mine, Trinidadian/NYC based artist Makeda Thomas (makedathomas.org) shared a link on her Facebook page, to a statement released by Lauryn Hill, concerning being charged with failure to file her tax returns. In a time of shallow celebrity culture its a pretty deep and interesting piece of writing.
While it would be easy for critics to dismiss Ms Hill as crazy, and while the tax man is never going to take 'going underground as self protection' as a valid reason for not filing you tax return, the core of what she is saying is both beautiful and important (important to society as a whole, not just artists). The very action of putting it out in to the public realm is brave, but also necessary.
