Taking a quick glance at this coming Sadlers season, spurred on by the recent blog entry of evilimp. I realized our beloved Hofmiester isn't the only thing that is being re-made for no particular reason than (as far as we can tell) money.
And good on them, it's a way to beat the credit crunch and all.
Cost effective arts programming, that's what we like, the art crunch...bad news for all of you looking to make new and interesting things and bad news for trying to find work (as if it wasn't hard enough).
But good news for unoriginal collaborations and good news for those of us who like watching Dave, which is essentially a channel full of repeats.
So we pick up our Sadlers Wells season brochure after Christmas all excited and giddy to discover....
Hofesh!! (excellent! wait...no...its the same one)
Sylvie Guillem and Russell Maliphant?! (ok, it sounds a little familiar but ok...nice)
Dance united! (this sounds new!...oh...erm... Choreography by Hofesh Shechter and Russel Maliphant...could still be nice I guess)
Russel Maliphant! (hhmm, optimism wearing off a little)
Yasmin Vardimon! (same piece as Yesterday (clever huh?)...optimism gone)
Rambert! (so its new but odds on very samey)
Random Dance (Repeat)
Sidi Larbi (repeat)
Mathew Bourne (repeat)
Carlos Acosta (remake of a repeat)
In between the repeats and random flamenco shows which the strictly come dancing generation (who ever they are) go to see, there are a few humdingers.
Forsythe, Les Ballets C. de la B., Jérôme Bel, Daniel Kramer's Pictures from an Exhibition (an original collaboration!), The Clod Ensemble...Its a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
A few head turns and an over use of brackets later, we're done.
