what is the film room?

1. Introduction

The Film Room is our new location for film/video material made by you. Try as we might it's impossible for us to cover every piece of dance out there. Even with unlimited resources we would struggle, so we have decided to create a section for video material you can send to us for permanent featuring in the Film Room

2. How Does It Work?

It's really very simple. You send us a 6 minute video clip (max) and then we put it online in The Film Room, easy! We will assess each piece of video material, make technical alterations as necessary, then add your video to the room in a high quality format running at 25 frames per second. Your video material will have a permanent, llinkable home on Article19. Here is a demo movie to show you what your film looks like when it's online.

3. What kind of video?

Either a dance film, performance video, rehearsal footage or perhaps a solo you've been working on that you want to showcase, absolutely anything you like (almost) as long as it's dance related. We're also restricting this service to professional dancers, dance companies and student dancers. Finally, The clip must be no longer than 6 minutes.

4.How Much Does It Cost?

Nothing, it's free

5. How Do I Send You The Video Then?

First of all, read the PREP VIDEO page very carefully and choose a method to send us your video. Then, hit the SUBMIT FILM link and fill in your details. If you are sending us a Mini DV tape or DVD Data Disc then we will email you a mailing address.

6. Does this mean you guys won't be filming stuff anymore?

Not at all. Article19 will continue to shoot video features, interviews, and all manner of other things for as long as we keep Article19 online.

7. Do we retain copyright of our video

Absolutely, you only grant Article19 a limited, non-exclusive licence to show the video on Article19.

8. What if we have more questions?

If you need any more information or some help preparing your video material before sending it to us then use our forum to ask us about it.

What You Need To Know

The artistic merit of your work is up to you, the only reason we will reject your film is on technical grounds.

If you're sending us a piece of video from a live performance pick the strongest section.

A sure way for us to reject your video is by filming hand held. Tripods are the saving grace of even the most vanilla of film makers, your video will look a hundred times better for it and make sure the camera is level unless your tilting it for dramatic effect.

If you must film hand held then keep the camera as stable as possible, cradle it in your arms and keep left and right pans smooth and sharp.

Don't chop off your dancers legs or their heads in live performance filming, show us the full picture. There are lot's of videos on Article19 to use as reference point for the best type of framing.

Don't use auto-focus. If your video goes out of focus then we can't use it. Switch it off and do it manually, it's harder but your video will look all the better for it.

Learn how to adjust the exposure on your camera. Over exposed video will show as burned out white blobs on your video material, adjust the exposure to compensate for the lighting and don't rely on the camera's auto exposure system to do it for you.

If you're editing a few sections of a live show together make the sections substantial. For example, a six minute feature, the maximum we allow, should be broken down into either 3 sections of 2 minutes or 2 sections of 3 minutes. Longer sections give the viewers a chance to get to know your work.
