Dance 4 Film

Published Wednesday, 4 January, 2006 |

It is not only disappointing but also horrifying to view Channel 4’s latest presentation of ‘Dance 4 Film’. It is so disheartening to see contemporary dance shown in such a confusing and irritating way from the presentation of Jonzi D.

The self obsessed presenter introduces himself with greater importance than the actual films. At one point he even explained the dancers in a film about insomnia as ‘quite sexy’. This comment greatly spoilt the traumatic and powerful atmosphere of this in-depth beautiful film titled ‘Insomnia’.

Some may say that this strong character is exactly what the contemporary dance world needs in order to break into the media spotlight. If it would be of any help, I would be praising Jonzi D myself.

As a Contemporary Dance student and aspiring dance filmmaker, I can safely say that the makers and performers of these Dance films are able to communicate, express and therefore speak for themselves.

After trying for several months to get an air date and a list of those taking part from Channel4, and not succeeding, they have agreed to send us a tape of the show for review. We missed the broadcast because of the usual lack of publicity for this type of thing, keep an eye out for a review and some comment when, or indeed if, we get the tape.
