The Weblog of Catherine Bell: Too Much Time on my Hands

This week has been really frustrating! I had assumed that by Monday’s class my ankle would have recovered, but it hadn't and I haven't been able to do class all week. I am off to the physio today though to sort it out! R (rest) I (ice) C (compression) E (elevation) doesn't seem to have worked it's magic here.
Anyway, have been observing class all week which is very difficult for an impatient person comme moi! In some ways though it has been beneficial being uninvolved with the class. For example, it is easier to understand corrections when you are watching them, and I understood why they were repeating an exercise incessantly (at least that's how it feels when in the class!).
We have a choreography assessment next Wednesday in which we will all show our own pieces and dance in others. We have been working on these since the beginning of term, so it is very important my ankle will be be on top form for me by then!
I thought it was very interesting to watch the work myself and the others in my class have produced, in that the mood in each was consistently reflective of that individual’s character. For example, some were innocent, very mellow! resentful, hopelessly romantic, slightly superficial, quirky. Obviously this was just my perception of them. It made me realise that when one starts making work it is nearly always this personally revealing, entirely subjective in it's dealings with issues, and the issues themselves are usually very grave! Is this purely because of inexperience or is it a necessary process/therapy one must go through to become a more successful choreographer?
I feel like I maybe have veered a little off the track now! (Too much time on my hands!), but this then made me ask how much any artists actually utilise their 'art' as their personal therapy. Is working through our feelings or repressions through art enough or could we/do we already go one step further and analyse their work to find some meaning, through contact with their sub-conscious.
