The Weblog of Catherine Bell: This Week and My Ankle (again!)
Thursday, Dec 5 2002, 12:37
This week has been a bit stressful because our teacher/choreographer is not at all well and couldn't come in every day to rehearse us and tell us what to do! We have all been really worried, firstly about her because she is luvvely! and our piece which is also luvvely but not yet finished.
All the movement had been made but the structure of it is yet to be decided. As third years we were trusted to get on with the rehearsing ourselves with the other teachers giving us time whenever they could to be an outside eye, and polish material. This made me realise how much I rely on Cath (luvvely teacher) to motivate, direct, demonstrate, and be the diplomat!
The ankle is better, which I am so grateful for! Was worried for a while there. The weird thing is I didn't notice it get better, it was gradually healing every day but on tuesday I was dancing around and suddenly realised that I had been jumping and turning on my left and it didn't hurt! My theory is that when injured your instinct is to protect the area or limb and so if you continue to dance before it has healed you will always be apprehending a new injury on it. With me for example it was turning the same ankle because it was so weak. Dancing carefully like this means dancing awkwardly, and that increases your chances of re-injuring youself. It's like when you're drunk, and your inhibitions are LOST!
I could dance the night away with a twisted ankle and not be aware of it, mainly because I am totally relaxed.(I hope nobody thinks I am suggesting that dancing stupidly whilst inebreated aids recovery!) Obviously alcohol numbs pain as well so this may have something to do with it. Was just a thought. Wonder whether a small part of me albeit subconcsious will always be more aware and therefore careful with my left ankle
