Bryony Mylroie Smith: The tears and the laughter

Monday, Dec 6 2004, 02:34

"First Year Showing" Previous | Main | Next "One week to go!!!!"

Last week was a tiring and pressuring week. We had six ballet classes, four with Kim and two with Sheena. We're normally timetabled to have about four a week but as Sheena is leaving at Christmas and Kim is taking over there is a period of merge before Christmas. Last week we also had a lot of joint classes with the blue group which is often very busy and full, resulting in exercises being done in four or so different groups, and maybe even twice!!!

We also had a joint class with the second years for ballet, this was very interesting as I’ve never really seen them dancing. It was also a bit of an ego boost for all of the red group as we already knew the exercises, and Kim’s teaching style unlike the second years who were experiencing it for the first time.

Production work went really well last week; we made a lot of progress despite the fact that we didn’t quite make as much as Laura had hoped (she'd wanted to finish the fast piece, we have only done 4 minutes!)

Thursday I would say we made the most progress on the fast piece. I think if we're talking in terms of minutes we made about a minute and a half, but I’m not sure, material wise there is so much in there and it's so busy! I think another reason we made so much progress on Thursday is because we had two production classes, this can be seen as a good thing, but also as a bad thing, we had a full day and by the time we got to last class of production everyone was exhausted and on the brink of crumbling. You could tell that people were tired, if you asked a question you got a blank expression as a response or people (mainly me, in fact, probably just me) couldn't construct their sentences or get the words out!

Despite being so tired on Thursday, Friday was a very good day, we had a contemporary class with Nicola and then had a mini Pilates assessment, this involved each person in the class teaching an exercise that they'd been practicing, I think we all passed!

The week ended in a relaxed way, Sheena was tired when it came to our last class of the week and so we suggested (as the class was quite small) teaching an exercise each. Sheena would choose a piece of music and someone would have to create an exercise, it was quite challenging, but a good laugh, and a good end to the week!
